Wes Montgomery L-5 CES

"Montgomery is undoubtedly one of the most important voices in Jazz guitar that has ever lived – or most likely ever will live. A discussion of Jazz guitar is simply not thorough if it does not touch upon Wes Montgomery." — Dave Miele and Dan Bielowsky, Jazz Improv Magazine, Vol. 7, No. 4

It's difficult to comprehend one guitar player having such a profound influence on any one musical genre, much less one as conspicuously diverse as jazz music. Yet in the span of just a few years in the late 1950s and early 1960s, jazz legend Wes Montgomery was able forge a body of work that is still referred to today as the most important and influential of any music ever recorded by a jazz artist. Montgomery's mastery of the guitar is well documented, and the enormous impact on his peers is recognised time and time again, from Pat Metheny to George Benson to Joe Satriani, all of whom claim Montgomery as the virtuoso who inspired them to reach new heights. Montgomery began his musical journey at the age of 19, listening to the early recordings of his idol, Charlie Christian, and learning the solos note for note. His approach to playing jazz involved the heavy use of single note lines, block chords and octaves, plucking the strings with the fleshy part of his thumb instead of using a pick. His unique style and technique would eventually become known as the "Naptown Sound."

Seriously awesome les paul CS9 in hard to find ice t finish.

If you have a need for a rock machine with a lot of history you can not go wrong with a Gibson Custom Shop '59 Les Paul. This is one of the worlds most iconic guitars and even though it only survived a single year before being changed out it is one of the most sought after models. Revised again for 2015 the CS9 Custom Shop model has brand new hardware and construction to make it one of the best reissues yet.

Now Completely Solid

Back in 1959 manufacturing techniques for building guitars were no where near as advanced as they are today. This meant that they had much simpler designs including completely solid mahogany used on the body and neck with a solid Indian rosewood fretboard. While going for an all solid non weight relieved design does add a lot of bulk to the guitar it also maximizes the resonant qualities of the guitar. If you are after the classic Les Paul sound having this kind of build is an absolute must.

Now because this is a '59 model it had to have a period correct neck. Between '58 and '60 the Les Paul went through 3 main neck shapes that all had a similar shape carves but as the years went on the thickness went down. So as this is the middle year it is in the middle in terms of size. Not quite thin enough to be a shred machine but not big enough to completely stop you from soloing this is a top choice for the versatile player.

Nitro Finish

Most guitars you can buy today have what is known as a poly finish. This is a thicker much more resilient material that means your guitars finish will stay as the manufacturers intended. This wasn't an option back in 1959 though when the best material of choice was Nitrocellulose lacquer that was not only extremely volatile but also wore down quit easily. Because of its thin and somewhat flimsy nature Nitro finishes age wonderfully where the more you play it the better the wear. It also has a tonal benefit as well as it is much thinner your normal poly finish it allows the wood to breath and therefore become more resonant.

Vintage Designed Components

VOS is a term you will see quite often in Gibson's catalogue. It is the term they use to define a guitar that has been worn to look like an original sat in its case until today. The finish will be untouched but all of the hardware goes through artificial wearing to give it a classic look. What some people don't know about this though is that it can also define the specification of the guitar. With a VOS model you not only get classic plastics but vintage inspired wiring with bumblebee capacitors as well. These may not sound like major changes but they all add up to make this guitar as good as it can possibly be.

Custombuckers

Thought to be some of the best pickups Gibson currently produce these Alnico III Custombuckers have some serious vintage flair. Until recently these pickups were only available as part of the Collectors Choice series and other higher end models. Now however they are available on all CS guitars giving you a vintage tone you know you can rely on.

Gibson Refin Hot Mod 1955 les paul wraptail

Fantastic les Paul which is a great weight with a great neck and a fab tone , Seriously recomended.

Refin Hot-Mod 1955 Les Paul Wraptail

A Blend of “Mod” and “Vintage” in One Hot Tone Machine
Underappreciated during its original run from 1958-’60, the Les Paul Standard with sunburst finish and PAF humbucking pickups caught fire from the mid ’60s to the early ’70s, when players like Eric Clapton, Michael Bloomfield, Jimmy Page and Paul Kossoff carried it to the heights of wailing virtuosity. As the original item became more and more expensive and harder to come by, players in search of the ’Burst look and that creamy, thick humbucking tone began modifying the more plentiful 1952-’56 Les Paul Goldtops that were originally made with P-90 pickups, creating guitars very much like this exclusive limited-run Refin Hot-Mod 1955 Les Paul Wraptail from the Gibson Custom Shop. In the course of these modifications, a rare breed was created: a “modded” vintage guitar that retained considerable value with players and collectors alike.

When done right—which meant sending the guitar back to Gibson for a full factory refin and a pair of desirable new humbucking pickups—these guitars became the closest possible thing to a genuine 1958-’60 Les Paul Standard, and delivered in spades the look, tone and feel that so many players were seeking. The Custom Refin Hot-Mod 1955 Les Paul Wraptail embodies just such a modification done perfectly, and it even exhibits the only obvious tell-tale sign of such alterations: the slightly off-center seam in the two-piece maple top, which would originally have been hidden beneath an opaque Goldtop finish. This guitar begins with the template of a 1955 Les Paul with solid one-piece lightweight mahogany back and carved maple top, adds the “Refin” element of rich nitrocellulose cherry sunburst finish, gives it the “Hot-Mod” of two BurstBucker humbucking pickups, while retaining its early ’55 “wraptail” bridge, represented by a TonePros wraparound bridge with locking studs and long steel anchors. Add it up, and it’s a bundle of PAF-fired ’Burst tone in your hands.

Gibson’s BurstBucker pickups are acclaimed as the most accurate PAF reproduction the company has ever made. A BurstBucker 1 in the neck position offers vocal warmth with plenty of definition, while a slightly hotter BurstBucker 2 in the bridge provides more growl and midrange punch for solo work. Both are made with unpolished Alnico II magnets just like the originals, and slightly mismatched coils for that bite and edge that great original PAFs are known for. To give all this tone the most playable spin possible, the Refin Hot-Mod 1955 Les Paul Tune-O-Matic is fitted with Gibson Custom’s new “Soft Shoulder” ’55 neck profile, created after intensive study of an original ’55 Les Paul with a “magical feeling” neck. With a similar front-to-back depth as standard rounded mid-’50s necks, it differs in its gently sloping sides, a feature that makes it sit incredibly comfortably in the hand.
